Higher Beer Tax: Wyoming
1. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/govbeat/wp/2013/09/12/wyoming-legislators-want-higher-beer-tax/
2. Category of Problem: Taxes
3. Level of Problem: State
4. This Article Concerns: Updating current beer tax laws in Wyoming
5. Importance/affect on families/individuals: The increase in state beer tax will result in extra funding to substance abuse treatment services available to families/individuals in the area.
6. My input: I am in favor of the beer tax being raised in Wyoming. This is due to the fact that Wyoming taxes beer at a rate of just 2 cents per gallon, the lowest in the nation, and has not updated their beer tax since 1935. If the tax was adjusted for inflation the state would be charging 34 cents per gallon today. Even with legislation to change and pass this tax law, I still dont feel that families and individuals will notice any change in their monthly budgets or expenses for alcohol/beer. The proposal does not even plan on changing the tax to its estimated adjusted rate for inflation, they merely wish to add a tax increase that would amount to less than a penny per 12 oz long-neck. If the legislation's revenue is used towards giving back to a positive outlet for the community like substance abuse treatment, then I am all for this slight increase and update to the law that hasn't changed in 78 yrs.
