2) Category of Problem/Issue: Sexual Orientation
3) Level of Issue: Local
4) Problem/Issue that Individuals/Families face
5) Why this is important to individuals/families OR
How does this affect individuals/families:
In San
Antonio there has been a heated debate that caused gay-and-straight divisions. This
can affect the city as a whole by making it unlawful to deny people any services
that are generally available to the public because of their sexual orientation.
What are your views on the issue/policy?
My view
on the issue is no matter of anyone’s sexual orientation it should not be a
reason we can’t accommodate services because they still are American citizen
and should be treated as such. When it comes to marriage the issue becomes a
bit more unsteady because that when religion comes into play. The people who
oppose believe that marriage in Texas should ONLY be between one man and one
woman and they deeply hold religious view. Republicans are trying to show that
they are true and trustworthy conservatives that are against undesirable social
change. Me being a Christian I understand the Republicans view on the situation
because the bible does speak about homosexuality. On the other hand people can’t
control who they are and who they love and if it is really a free country they
should be free to decide on their sexual orientation. This issue can affect
businesses, restaurants, city officials, housing, city employees, and etc. but
I don’t think it is worth all the attention it is getting. People like Councilwoman
Elisa Chan stirred up an uproar with her statement of calling homosexuality “disgusting”
and gays and lesbians should not be allowed to adopt. The only person I really
agree with is San Antonio’s mayor, Julian Castro, when he said,” San Antonio
belongs to everyone, regardless of the stance of Republican leaders…I respect
their perspective, but we did what’s in the best interest of San Antonio.” I
think that was a wise statement from the mayor because he is respecting
everyone’s perspective but he has to do the right thing for San Antonio and
that is what a real mayor does.
