NY Times: Rights Group and Clinics Sue Texas Over Abortion Law

2. Category of Problem/Issue identified in article: Medical

3. Level of Problem/Issue: State

4. A potential policy that is being considered to help a problem/issue that individuals/families face.

5. Why is it important to individuals/families or how does this affect individuals/families?

This will affect women who choose to get an abortion and will also affect clinics like Planned Parenthood. These two protocols will make it more difficult for a woman to get an abortion.

6. What are your views on the issue/policy?

I am pro-life, however, I think this is a shady attempt at ridding abortion. They're forcing unnecessary protocols to eventually shut down all of the small abortion clinics in the state. I don't agree with the way they're doing it but I do agree with why they are. Most women get abortions because of financial reasons or because they're not ready for the responsibility. In fact, this percentage is 42%. Less than 1% of women get an abortion because of rape/incest. That is the only reason I see fit to have an abortion. 89% of abortions take place between the 6th and the 12th week of pregnancy. By the 6th week of pregnancy, the baby's heart is beating 80 times per minute. By the 12th week of pregnancy, the baby's digestive system is beginning to practice contraction movements so it will be able to eat. That is why I'm pro-life. There's a living human inside of a woman and they want to get rid of it because they can't afford it or can't handle the responsibility. I feel like women need to be educated more on pregnancy prevention methods because I don't agree with telling a woman how to express her love with a man. I would just rather them be smart about it so abortions won't even be "necessary". I feel like the government should team up with these clinics and promote the education of pregnancy prevention and they should start as early as middle school. Young teens need to hear the truth about sex as well as be educated on how to protect themselves and not get pregnant. In Texas though, abstinence is still promoted (which is good, don't get me wrong) but its no longer realistic. We live in an age now where the MTV show "Teen Mom" is widely praised. Kids should be educated and informed. Clinics should help promote this and the government should be right along side them. Isn't that what everyone wants? Less unwanted pregnancies and more educated young people?
