Texas: Split Ruling Over Political Maps

2.     Category of Problem/Issue identified in article: Political
3.     Level of problem/issue: State level
4.     State whether the article is concerning one of the following: Individuals/ families who are minorities in the state of Texas who vote.

                   5. Why this is important to individuals/families OR How does this affect individuals/families: If the law states nothing about the legislature drawing it own maps to enhance their own chances of winning, why does the minority vote even matter? This affects all who vote and want their vote to count, but if the legislature is able to draw their own map to make it where anything against them will be diminished.

6. What are your views on the issue/policy? The article states, "Mr. Abbott’s office has argued that Republicans who control the Legislature drew maps to enhance their party’s chances, which is legal, and that if it hurts minorities who mostly vote Democratic, it is not a civil rights violation." How is this not a violation of our rights?! We as minorities have came a long way, more African American than others, to be able to vote. In 2013 we are yet seeing issues with minorities, if the tables were turned and legislature was controlled by Democrats, and they were to draw the maps to enhance the voting power of minorities over the voters who vote Republican this would be considered unfair and violating the civil rights. I don't think legislature should draw out their own map and for elections to continue. The lawsuit should proceed and their should be a verdict and that verdict should be allowing judges instead of a legislature controlled by one political party- the Republicans. I may not know much about politics, but this reeks unfairness and violation of someone's voting power.
