- McAuliff, Michael; Siddiqui, Sabrina. (2013, September 20). Huff Post Politics: Vote to Defund Obamacare Primes Showdown Over Shutdown. www.huffingtopost.com/2013/09/20/government-shutdown-vote
- Category of problem: Family
- Level of problem: National level
- The article concerns: The House of Representatives passed a stopgap funding bill Friday that will shut down the government unless Democrats agree to defund President Barack Obama's marquee health care law.
- Why is this important to families / individuals OR how does it affect individuals / families?
- The continuing resolution would not only permanently strip the Affordable Care Act of its funding, but would lock in government spending at sequester levels that conflict with the budget passed in the Senate. It also sets up another potentially even more consequential showdown over the nation's debt limit, but including the so-called Full Faith and Credit Act, a measure that Republicans say would allow the Treasury Department to still pay the nation's creditor's, and therefore avoid a default, if the debt limit, not at $16.7 trillion, is not raised.
- What are your views on the issue / policy?
- Although the stated point of this is to "keep the doors open" for the federal government, the main theme of the act is to defund Obama's health care law. Obamacare was supposed to be a health insurance industry reform that would make it more affordable for those with insurance, and provide insurance for those who did not otherwise have any coverage. As the true impact of the law has come out, people are finding out that it is not so affordable, and they may lose what coverage they have anyway. Employers are cutting back on their employees working hours to under 30 - the cutoff whereby employers are required to provide health insurance - and some are even cutting staff through layoffs or hiring only part-time workers. Once again, this law is another intrusion by the bloated, arrogant federal government to intrude itself into the lives of the American people. Everyone can pretty much agree that the health insurance industry needs overhauling, but a law like this one is not the way to do it. Forcing people into coverage, or paying a fine if you don't, is just irrational. Plus, the exemptions that Obama has granted to large corporations and the lawmakers themselves makes it a law that subjects people to more hardships, unless, of course, you support the Democratic party and the President where you can get an exemption outside the law. It's getting harder and harder to believe any of these hypocritical bureaucrats, and it seems the "Pinocchio Effect" is prevalent throughout Washington, D.C.!
This is a blog for Texas State students taking FCS 4347 (Family Policy) to be able to post their weekly reading assignment (3 newspaper articles about issues or policies that effect individuals and families) and to write their reactions, opinions and implications of the articles.
