NY Times: F.B.I. Plans to Close Offices for 10 Days to Cut Costs

1. http://nyti.ms/14KPH8n

2. Category of Problem/Issue identified in article: Financial

3. Level of problem/issue: National

4. A potential policy that is being considered to help a problem/issue that individuals/families face

5. Why this is important to individuals/families OR How does this affect individuals/families? According to the article, some people are worried about how effectively the bureau can respond to crime if they're off for 10 days out of the year all at once. On the other hand, this will help out our economy because we would be saving $160 million dollars by implementing these days. My question is, where exactly will that $160 million go?

6. What are your views on the issue/policy? I have mixed feelings about this issue. I agree in the sense that we would be saving a lot of money by implementing furlough days. On the other hand, safety is a huge issue as well as financially for those FBI employees. They won't get paid for 10 days out of the year that they expected to work. I think Congress is cutting the wrong parts of our budget. We need government employees like police officers, FBI agents, teachers, etc. We shouldn't be cutting their already small paychecks. Maybe we could cut the governmental officials' paychecks a little bit. They make $175,000 a year. Obviously that's not going to happen at all but my point is this. Why are we cutting teaching jobs forcing principals and other teachers to do more work than they already have to do? Why are we paying them less for doing double the work? Why are we paying police officers and firefighters less for working several hours of the day keeping us safe? And why are we cutting FBI agents days when they rely heavily on those paychecks? I know we (tax payers) pay their salaries. I understand that. But all I'm saying is, let's redistribute the wealth. Let's re-prioritize the spending and the budget. Stop cutting hard working government people's paychecks and start fixing the real problem.
