Texas CPS begins checking safety of foster children in private contractor's care

2. Category of Problem/Issue identified in the article: children

3. Level of Problem/Issue is state level

4. The article concerns an "enacted" policy that has been passed to help with a problem/issue that individuals/families face

5. This article is important to CPS staff and private contractor's that have children that are in their foster care. The individuals and/or families that have foster children will be receive "safety checks" which could affect their lives. CPS staff workers will be busy conducting home safety checks for the safety of foster children.

6. I personally think that CPS stepping up and being more vigilant of private contractor's is a great thing. I think that CPS should have been more through from the very beginning but it is comforting to know that safety home checks are being conducted. The safety of children in the care of private contractor's is extremely important and CPS works do need to keep up with who these families let into their houses and how they treat their children. It was also comforting to me that after a home in Austin was swept 2 children were removed before anything terrible happened to them. I hope that CPS actually does through safety checks on all homes and that another death does not happen.

  1. I think that it is great the Texas CPS is being more thorough with their safety home checks. This could save children's lives who are being unfairly treated or abused. I always remember this kid in my elementary that always had ragged clothing and never had really good hygiene. I often thought it was because he had so many siblings and maybe they didn't have enough money to afford things, but later on learned that him and his other 9 siblings were all foster care children. And it was later on that I saw that his parents were doing it for the money that they got from Foster Care. They would use the money to buy things for themselves and new cars and use what was left for the kids. I think around the time I was in high school things got better for them, but because they started to get frequent visits from CPS. You could tell they were better taken care of once they got frequent visits. They weren't abused or ever complained of being treated wrong, but I still didn't think that it was right for their foster parents to put their needs first, before their kids. I feel like coming from the valley I've seen so many bad examples such as this, and also those using food stamp money for other reasons. I don't want to make it seem as if everyone does it, because they don't. With food stamps, I think that the recent cuts are terrible. Sure I see people abuse the system, which cringes me, but that doesn't mean that those who truly need it should be punished. I guess this goes for foster care as well. Even though I have seen sad stories about it, I am sure that there are foster parents that give their children what they need and more. I think that this can only be proved to be positive. If foster parents are doing things right, then they have nothing to worry about. If they are doing wrong, hopefully CPS can take care of it, and get these children the proper care that they need. I have a cousin who has worked for CPS. She always said it's the toughest job she's had, having to take children away from their homes, but at the same time, she said it's rewarding to see the kids who have been mistreated or abused to get a second chance on having a better life. Texas CPS seems like it is becoming more involved with safety checks and making sure that each child is taken care of. It's great.
