Dallas City Council rejects mayor’s call for merit raises, voting instead for a blanket 3 percent
2  .      Category of problem/issue identified in article: environment and financial
     3.      Level of problem/issue: local level

      4.      This article is a potential policy that is being considered to help a problem/issue that individuals face

      5.      This article is important for individual city workers because the issue concerned city workers pay checks by either having pay increases based on merit or pay increases that would be given to everyone across the board. The outcome of the vote favored pay increases that would be given across the board rather than based on merit.

      6.      My opinion on this issue is that Mayor Mike Rawlings had a great idea in basing pay raises on how well and hard someone works. By giving pay increases off of merit it could encourage the more lazy workers to work harder. It would also reward the workers that go the extra mile at work.  However, there would be many issues in raising workers’ pay this way. One issue is that someone who works really hard and to their best ability may get overlooked and not receive a pay increase. Another issue with this proposal is that the workers may become too competitive amongst themselves causing a hostile work environment. Lastly, the distribution of pay increases could become a political problem by the distributor picking favorites or not handing out a pay increase to some workers who deserve it because they do not like them. The council members ended up voting for a 3% raise to all city workers which seems fair for now. I do however think that in the future adding some type of merit pay would be a good thing to try out.
