On the Edge of Poverty, at the Center of a Debate on Food Stamps

2.      Problem/Issue identified in article:Poverty
3.      Level of problem/ issue: Nation Level
4.      The article concerns: A potential policy that is being considered to help a problem/issue that individuals/families face
5.      Why is this important to individuals/families OR how does this affect individuals/families?
There is a huge debate in Congress about the food stamp program that will affect families/ individuals all over the nation who depend on this particular program to survive. In November benefits for food stamps will be reduced for all recipients no matter what Congress decides. I feel that the people in the nation that are poor/disabled depend of food stamps to prevent from starving are at high risk. This issue is causing a huge uproar with the Democrats and Republican. Republicans feel that these people “mooch off the system” and the food stamp program should monitored closely by relating the program to work and there should be a mandatory drug test for recipients. We have to take in consideration that people that are not able to work to buy food are having to only eating once a day like the people in the article. Democrats are fighting that although America looks just fine in our eyes but we are still living on the edge of poverty and people shouldn’t have to skip meals and rationing food. There was a quote stated by Mr. Fincher saying, “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat,” I agree with this quote because you have those who take advantage of the system. On the other hand we also have a lot of citizens that really suffer from hunger. As stated in the article,” “People have a lot of misimpressions about hunger in America,” … “People think it’s associated with homelessness when, in fact, it is working poor families, it’s kids, it’s the disabled.” Since I mutually agree with both sides I believe there should be a policy in place that compromises both ideas instead of having those who really need food stamps to suffer.
