2. Category of Problem/Issue identified in article: Health/Medical

3. Level of problem/issue: Local Level

4. A problem/issue that individuals/families face

5. Why this is important to individuals/families OR How does this affect individuals/families:
It is important because it affects individuals with hearing problems in a positive way.  CTMC now has a Hearing Center to help the 5,000+ individuals who have a hearing problem here in San Marcos.

6. What are your views on the issue/policy?
My view on this issue is positive.  The Census Bureau's American Community Survey showed that in Hays county, there were 5,218 people with hearing disabilities in 2010.  Dr. Jasmine Burrington was born with hearing loss and now works with patients in a way that she would liked to be worked with.  I think that it's great that she understands what they're going through and can relate to her patients.  The community is growing in a positive way for even doctors to notice.  Clay DeStefano, director of public relations and marketing commented, "In the last couple of years, more physicians were coming to us saying 'I like this town.  I want to be part of this community and your hospital.  How can we work together?'"  I think that it is great for those individuals that face hearing problems and want to be treated in the best way.  Sam Huenergardt,  CTMC CEO, commented on how before he joined the hospital in 2009, there was only general surgery, orthopedics and primary care offered.  Now, CTMC has grown to include 24 physicians with 13 specialties.  I have been to the Caring Center for Women, which is part of CTMC, and felt so comfortable and was treated very well.  I have also been there to the emergency room once and felt so cared by the staff.  They truly care about their patients and don't leave you feeling as if you ever doubted coming for an appointment or emergency.  The people of our community who face certain health issues now have a place to go to, to get the care that they need.
