96-foot-tall project near Lady Bird Lake to go forward
-From Austin American Statesman, By Sarah Coppola
-Local Level
- Environment/Housing issue
- Concerns citizens of Austin, Texas, specifically residents who live downtown
- Austinites should be concerned with this issue because it will increase tourism to our city, increase construction cost from taxes, increase traffic congestion downtown and set standards for the fair housing act appeals for future issues.
- I'm excited to have a new attraction in Austin. The area spoken about in the article is in need of a revamp. There is a lot of trash, broken bridges and unkempt walking areas that will benefit from the plan. The plan will attract tourists, which will contribute to the local economy. And, the builders agreed to put money into a fund that helps build affordable housing in Austin.
The construction is going to cause a lot of traffic in an already congested traffic area. I avoid going downtown because of the traffic. not only will the new attraction bring in traffic, but the construction will cause a lot as well.
Those who oppose the project claim the tall infrastructure will block the view of the water. I assume they are concerned with the view from their homes, and it will decrease their property value. If i had a home overlooking a lake I would be concerned as well. however, I feel the more important issue is over-building Austin and making it a concrete city. One of the most amazing parts of Austin is the outdoorsy feel with parks and trees downtown.
The project is going to be larger than the city normally plans. And, when this happens they builders must pay a fee and contribute money to a fund that helps build affordable housing in Austin. However, some residents of Austin are angry about the fee amount and feel that it is not a fair contribution to the city.
I truly hope this project is finished with the cities best interest in mind.
