Earnes invests in security upgrades at school sites

1.

2. Safety in schools

3. Local level

4. A potential policy that is being considered to help a problem/issue that individuals/families face.

5. This policy is important because this way schools can avoid tragedies such as what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary. Security will also help parents feel better about leaving their children at school everyday.

6. I think that this potential policy is necessary for the safety of many younger children.  Parents leave their children at school on a daily basis thinking that they are in good hands. It is sad to think that while parents are at home or working their children could potentially be endangered. This policy would allow the school district to build fencing around Eanes Elementary school. A lot of people might think that a simple fence may offer minimal protection to the students at this school. In reality, having nothing to having a fence in place offers a great deal of protection. Although it is rare, with fencing children will not be tempted to leaving school grounds to go home or wander off into someone’s property.  This will also limit the amount of wanderers on school grounds that are not supposed to be on school property during school hours. Fencing will force visitors to only enter through the indicated entrance. This will allow the school office to ask for identification. The downside for this policy is that there should be other forms of security also implemented. I don’t feel that only the fencing will be enough for the protection of students. I believe that the school district should also implement programs like checking student backpacks or maybe even metal detectors at the doors. I strongly favor this policy, for the well being of many students and would encourage other schools to follow. It will be a difficult to put these programs into place, but it will help eliminate any potential danger.
