NY Times: Chicken Plants in Salmonella Outbreak Can Stay Open

1.

2. Category of Problem/Issue: Medical/Health

3. Level of Problem/Issue: National

4. An “enacted” policy that has been passed to help with a problem/issue that individuals/families face

5.  Why this is important to individuals/families OR How does this affect individuals/families?

.A salmonella outbreak resulting in 278 sick individuals in 17 states have caused poultry processing facilities to remain open during the government shutdown. Obviously, if they didn't stay open then more and more individuals would become ill and this country would face a salmonella epidemic.

6.  What are your views on the issue/policy?

I'm personally glad that they are remaining open. It's only in California but hopefully this will spark other states to open up their facilities. This government shutdown has caused a lot of turmoil for the citizens of this country and I'll be happy when it's over. It's not fair to the people to have to be weary of buying certain food products just because the food protection agencies can't stay open because of lack of pay due to the government shutdown. It's also one of the worst outbreaks because it has a high rate of hospitalizations of the victims. Plus, they can't use antibiotics because of the resistance to the salmonella strain. The government should just open back up, let the governmental employees work again and get paid, and that will allow the health and safety of the American people to be prioritized once more.
