University Star: Administrators Discuss Racial, Ethnic Identifiers

1. http://star.txstate.edu/node/965

2. Category of Problem/Issue: Ethnicity

3. Level of Problem/Issue: Local

4. A potential policy that is being considered to help a problem/issue that individuals/families face.

5. Why is this is important to individuals/families or how does this affect individuals/families?

First, it's important for people to be educated on the difference between race and ethnicity. Second, this is important for individuals and families because the system being used to record race and ethnicity is actually distorting the University's racial group. Future students and future parents of students may look at Texas State's reports on how diverse or non-diverse the school is and they will see numbers that aren't really accurate and they may change their mind about the student attending.
 6. What are your views on the policy/issue?

I am personally so thankful that someone has finally brought attention to this issue. The way the 2010 Census Bureau organized race and ethnicity is all mixed up. If you simply choose Hispanic then anything else you choose after that doesn't really matter. They still place you in the "Hispanic" category. In my case, I choose non-Hispanic for my ethnicity and then African-American and Caucasian for my race. They automatically place me in the "African-American" category because they're more interested in having their African-American percentages raise.

I just think the entire report is ignorant. We all know why they do it the way that they do but it needs to be revised. I find it offensive that they would completely ignore my other ethnic group. I come from two cultures. I am defined by two distinct cultures, not just one. Just because someone marks "Hispanic" doesn't mean they're completely defined as Hispanic. Like I stated before, I'm just glad someone has finally brought attention to this level of ignorance. Hopefully now or in the future with the next census, this will be revised.
