Clinical Trials Continue

“Clinical Trials Continue, but Only at a Crawl”

2. Category of Problem/Issue: Economy

3. Level of Problem/Issue: National

4. A problem/issue that individuals/families face

5. This problem is important because of its impact on the individuals who will not receive the treatment used to cure their terminal diseases. The government shutdown has also caused many jobs to be furloughed additionally impacting the many people out of work.

6. Similarly to my previous post, the government shutdown has caused quite a ruckus. As a result, the National Institute of Health (NIH) has been forced to slow down the rate at which they are conducting clinical trials. As unfavorable as this is, I feel like it is not as unreasonable as some other cutbacks that have been made throughout the shutdown. Although many more trial patients could be receiving beneficial treatment, the NIH is luckily able to admit a few patients at a slower pace. These clinical trials are not just a solution to cure these patients, but these are yearlong experiments and research studies in order to help cure terminal diseases. In my opinion, it will be extremely detrimental for these trials if the government is shut down for much longer. What the article does mention that irritates me a little is the fact that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are not able to conduct monitoring activities such as the flu virus. It is scary to think that if there is a flu outbreak, that the CDC will not be there to regulate it. It is noted that the CDC was responsible for knowing that last year’s outbreak was early and strong. The facts about this year’s flu season will not be as accurate. It is equally as scary knowing that outbreaks such as the current salmonella outbreak are not monitored as well as it usually would be if it is at all. All in all, it is nice to know that through this government shutdown, these government programs have not been completely shut down but only slowed down (as unfavorable as that is).
