2. Category of Problem/Issue: Health/ Medical/ Food Safety

3. Level of Problem/Issue: National

4. A problem/issue that individuals/families face

5.  Why this is important to individuals/families OR How does this affect individuals/families?

Salmonella can contaminate meat during slaughter and processing and is especially common in raw chicken. The infections can be avoided by proper handling and cooking of raw poultry but, this salmonella outbreak resulted in 278 sick individuals in 17 states.

6.  What are your views on the issue/policy?

Since the investigation of the salmonella outbreak they have put new food safety controls into place. Since the government said inspectors would monitor the company’s improvements and sample the company’s meat for the next three months they can remain open during government shutdown. I’m glad they found a way to control this situation in a professional manner because people are already upset with what is going on with the government shutdown. I know this outbreak has frightened the citizen all over America because they are concerned about purchasing certain food products since agencies can’t stay open due to the shutdown. This shutdown is not only affecting us American financially but in safety of our food and our health.
