- Category of Problem/Issue Identified in the Article: Health Care
- Level of Problem/Issue: National
- The article concerns how even with the health care law in affect many of the people that was intended to help ended up being the one out of luck.
- Why this is important to individuals/families/how does this affect individuals/families? It is very important for those who have supported and have been waiting for this law to pass, because now many may not qualify due to Supreme Court allowing states to expand Medicaid or not.
- What are your views on the issue/policy? I believe that now seeing how easily it is to find a way around many laws, makes you think why should have them in the first place? I mean the laws that have to do with alcohol, drugs, and other substances are much more strict and usually there is not as much loopholes around it. As for laws that will benefit the people, social programs where we would benefit are usually the first ones to get cut, or revised by the Supreme Court to allow states to do what they want. This actually happened with the new health care act, the Supreme Court ruling last year to allow states to expand Medicaid or not. So 26 states decided not to. Of course most being Republican dominated southern states, by which most of the people who the program was suppose to help are poor and won't be qualifying for the Health Care. Another factor that strikes me to surprise is how they qualify, you can be an individual working full-time making only $8,000 a year and not qualify if you don't have any children. What is that?! seriously, you want the person to be dead broke with starving children to consider for health care? I think that is really wrong and I hope that these 26 states, including Texas, change the decision or over turn it.
This is a blog for Texas State students taking FCS 4347 (Family Policy) to be able to post their weekly reading assignment (3 newspaper articles about issues or policies that effect individuals and families) and to write their reactions, opinions and implications of the articles.
